CVSA Sets Brake Safety Week for Aug. 23–29

Inspectors across North America will focus on commercial-vehicle brake systems and components during the seven-day initiative.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has scheduled Brake Safety Week for Aug. 23–29, 2026. The seven-day inspection and enforcement initiative will put additional attention on commercial-vehicle brake systems throughout Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

CVSA says trained inspectors will conduct routine commercial motor vehicle inspections with a focus on brake systems and components. A vehicle with a brake-related out-of-service violation, or another condition that meets the out-of-service criteria, may be removed from the road until the violation is corrected.

This year's inspection focus

Brake drums and rotors are the special emphasis for the 2026 event. CVSA says problems with those components can reduce brake efficiency. Broken drum or rotor pieces can also come loose while a vehicle is moving, creating a hazard for other road users.

Inspectors will report inspection and violation data to CVSA during the week. The organization plans to analyze the collected brake data and release the results later in the year.

What happens next

The event also includes an education component for drivers, carriers, and mechanics. CVSA describes the week as both an enforcement effort and an opportunity to reinforce the role of brake inspection, maintenance, and operation in commercial-vehicle safety.

Brake Safety Week begins Aug. 23 and ends Aug. 29. The primary CVSA announcement contains the scope, dates, and inspection focus for the initiative.
